August Highlights from the Six-Pack of Peaks Community
A Six-Pack of Peaks Vacation
I've completed the Colorado Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge in six consecutive days, but I've often wondered if anyone could hike all eleven peaks (the original six plus the alternates) in the New England Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge in eleven days?
It's no longer a rhetorical question, because Ted Foster did just that. The San Diegan has notched quite a few finishes across the challenge series, including SoCal, San Diego, and both the Summer and Winter editions of the Arizona challenge. And in August, he added the New England challenge to that list. Some of the hikes he doubled up, but he got it done. Congratulations, Ted!
And if that weren't enough, another SoCal challenger is currently working her way through the New England challenge. Go Caroline!
All National Forests Closed in California
For the first 17 days of September, the forest service has shut down all of the National Forests in California. The goal is to reduce the risk of new wildfires starting while firefighting resources are already stretched thin.
Fortunately, the deadline for completing the SoCal challenge is December 31st, so you will still have plenty of time to bag your six peaks.
With wildfires, hurricanes, and poor air quality becoming increasingly common, what is your Plan B when the trails you want to hike are closed?
August Gear Giveaway Winner
Congratulations to our August Gear Giveaway winner Cheryle from Phoenix. She won the Matador “Packable Pack.” This is a cool bit of gear to have in your collection, as it's easy to stow and bring with you anywhere.
I like to have a small, lightweight bag like this on backpacking trips. I can use it as a stuff sack inside of my backpack, and then when I set up base camp, take this on day explorations.
Our September giveaway is now up. You could win a combo package of a Hydro Flask and a LUCI Solar-powered Lamp. Head over to the Monthly Giveaway page to enter!
August By-the-Numbers
The Six-Pack of Peaks community logged 345 peaks in the challenge during August. 40 challengers joined the finishers list in August, and we currently have 460 finishers across the challenge series.
Are you on the finishers list? You can view the finishers by going to Challenges, picking your challenge, then clicking the 2021 Finishers link. Make sure you're on the list before your challenge ends.
