Decided to start the San Diego Six Pack of Peaks Challenge early and finish fast! We began this journey at 0001 on Saturday, January 1, 2022. The goal was to complete all six peaks within 48 hours.
First up: High Point Palomar Mountain from the Oak Grove Trailhead. 13.4 miles and about 3,500 feet in elevation
Second: Hot Springs Mountain Trail from Los Coyote Indian Reservation. 10 miles and 2,420 feet in elevation gain
Third: Volcan Mountain from the Volcan Mountain Trailhead. 5 miles and 1,230 feet in elevation gain.
Fourth: Cuyamaca Peak from Lookout Road. 5.5 miles and 1,640 feet in elevation gain.
Fifth: Corte Madera Mountain Trail. 7 miles and 1,500 feet in elevation gain.
Six: El Cajon Mountain Trail. 11.3 miles and 3,575 feet in elevation gain.
Completed the six peaks, covering 52.2 miles and 13,865 total feet in elevation gain, in 35 hours 48 minutes. This included breaks during each hike, travel to and from each trailhead, and a couple much needed power naps.
During all six of these hikes we experienced extreme low temperatures (below freezing in most cases), extremely high winds (up to 45mph), and snowy and icy conditions. Except El Cajon Mountain where the temps went from 40 degrees up to about 75 degrees.
