Completing this challenge with Castle Dome
I saved this hike for last after reading how enjoyable it was for other reviewers of the trail. Indeed, it was a fun hike. The trail begins by going through a forested section, the path is mostly dirt which was nice way to start out. There was a couple of short steep areas in this section but given the elevation gain I thought it was nicely graded and in good condition. Once you get to the base of the Crags, the trail at times is a little less obvious requiring a pause to determine its course. I thought the last part of this section was more obvious and easier to get up. Eventually you will reach the “end of trail” sign, just past this is a nice view with lots of possible options to scramble and explore. Although you gain 2000+ feet in a couple of miles, I thought this was the easiest of the six hikes of this challenge that I did.
FYI Castle Crag State Park website, at the time of this post, reports the park will be closed 10/4- 10/10. See the park website for details.
