It was a cool, overcast day on Saturday the 16th as a group from the Bay Area Hikers took on Berryessa Peak. These brave women and men braved a very unsteady and at time overgrown trail to complete the 15 mile trail, gain 4206 in elevation in about 8 hours. This was also my 4th peak of the OTP and Bay Area 6 Peak Challenges!
The group started out at 8am and had the trail all to themselves. The only time we came across anyone was at the very start and end.
The trail is very overgrown in many areas with grass and brush and not maintained in any way. The path is uneven, riddled with holes, slick rocks, unstable trail, and a mudslide that has never been fixed at about the 3.5 mile mark. There were also 5-6 water crossings that were manageable.
Nevertheless, the greenness of the hillsides, flowers and bushes about to bloom, and the views were incredible. There was not much in the way of wildlife to see however there were many salamanders around the streams and in the in grass that we had to be careful not to step on in the first mile.
The trail after the slide becomes a mix of rocks, two more steep/slick descents and assents over two more water crossings. Then the hike to the access road where the trail is very overgrown and slippery at times.
We all made it to the top, took a few pictures, found shelter by the towers to have lunch the back the same way we came.
Regardless of the trail it was a great day to be out with a great group of hikers enjoying each others company and nature.
Thanks to all who came out to join me at Berryessa Peak! If you have any questions about my hikes feel free to message me and I’ll tell you more.
