7-24-2026 – Mount Eddy, Peak #4 of the NorCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge
After summiting Black Butte on the 23rd, I drove about 50 minutes over toward Mount Eddy’s Deadfall Meadow Trailhead in the hopes of finding a place to set up my trailer for the night. At about the 2.2-mile mark of the drive-up Forest Rte 42N17, I found the perfect spot. Making my drive to the trailhead in the morning about 15 minutes versus 40 minutes.
After setting up my trailer I decided to drive up to the trailhead just to check it out. About 1.3 miles before the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead was the Parks Creek Trailhead. It was a bit larger with more parking and pit toilets and seemed to be a more popular trailhead than Deadfall Meadows. Surprisingly, at least to me, it was a throughfare for the Pacific Crest Trail hikers.
While there, I came upon Sonic (a PCT hiker). I actually had met him earlier in July while doing some trail angel stuff at the Donner Pass Ski Resort. I had also followed his journey earlier this year on the Arizona Trail. Small world!
Anyway, back to my hike. I arrived at the trailhead on 7-24 at about 0630 and began my hike at 0649. Mount Eddy was a pretty good climb. I recorded 8.55 miles (with a quick detour to Deadfall Lakes) and 2,769 feet in total elevation gain. My hike to the summit was 4.18 miles with 2,668 feet in elevation gain. Mile 1, gain a moderate 509 feet. Mile 2, gain another 540 feet. And mile 3, gained 566 feet. The final 1.18 miles to the summit had a massive elevation gain of 1,053 feet. It was steep, but the steady incline of the switchbacks made the 1,000+ foot climb on the final mile seem easy.
Great views at the summit and along the trail. I saw several hikers on trail and camping as I was descending. I even ran into Boy Scout (a Southbound PCT hiker) as the PCT trail crossed my trail.
All in all, a great day and a very worthwhile trail for the challenge.
