Because of the gate at Sunol opening at 8 am and closing at 9 pm, we couldn’t get there early to beat the heat and we had to push it to make sure we got done by 9 pm. So, we were prepared to hike in the heat all day. The trail goes up and down the whole way. There are some large oak trees to give some shade. This would of been better as a backpack so you don’t feel rushed. Note that you need a permit to hike in the Ohlone Wilderness. You can either get it by mail by calling or doing it online or in person at the visitor center on the weekend or at the office in Oakland.
