Hiked with a group

Jim Mills, Doug Hansen and I tackled Volcan Mountain for the first in the 6 pack of peaks challenge. We could not have picked a better day. We were concerned about the heat which was going to set records but our timing was ideal. Maybe 70 degrees with a light breeze. We took the main trail up and the 5 oaks trail down. Both are great.

The main trail is a fire road that is sloped to one side most of the way. We encountered no mud. Steady uphill. You will pass a magnificent oak on your left.

The 5 oaks is a single track with switchbacks. Beautiful manzanita all along.
The view at the top is jaw dropping. From Catalina to the Salton Sea. Well worth the hike .
