Early start today. In the dark at 0623, headed for South Carolina’ s Sassafrass Mountain. The State High Point (my 29 of the 50 US State High Points) and my 5th peak of the Appalachian Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge.

I spent the first hour of this hike in the dark “cutting’ spider webs and avoiding spiders. There were literally hundreds of them. Most notably was the “average” Garden Spider. There webs located above the trail were easily between 2 to 5 feet in diameter. The Gardern Spider is a huge black and yellow spider that in some cases was almost as large as my hand. Some quick on trail research and I discovered that the large dangerous looking Garden Spider was harmless. Whew!!!

I recorded right at 9.48 miles and 2,425 feet in elevation gain for this hike. Just a bit longer than the Alltrails recording. Of course, I did walk around at the summit for a bit so maybe an added ½ mile. Still longer than Alltrails’ recording.

Pretty cool summit and awesome to see and be in both South Carolina and North Carolina at the same time. I only saw one other person at the summit. She drove up. My descent was relatively quick (no spider webs) and only a few hikers coming up the trail.
