A Peek Under the Hood at the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge Series
We are in the process of refactoring how peak badges are defined and awarded, and have completed the first phase.
Going forward, all peak badges will be evergreen, meaning that they won’t change from year to year. In the past, we recreated badges for each years’ challenges (2025, 2024, 2023, etc.). And so we ended up with a 2025 Phelps Mountain AND a 2024 Phelps Mountain badge. Multiply this by the number of current challenges (17) and the number of years each challenge has been active, and you can see how it got crazy.
For 2026 (and subsequent years) there will simply be a Phelps Mountain badge. There will still be individual year finisher badges, but your peak badges will track how many times you’ve logged a hike up that particular peak.
In phase two, we are looking at reassigning the prior year badges (going back to 2015, if possible) and giving credit for those on the new ‘evergreen’ badges. Once that’s complete, the ‘old’ calendar year peak badges will be retired.
In phase three, we will be updating the various challenge pages to generate and display peak data dynamically, making additions and changes easier as well as streamlining content management.
Somewhere along the way, we have some new challenges to introduce, including a new east coast challenge and a Yosemite challenge. Plus, we’ll have new tracking for state highpoints!
