My first time doing Bonanza! I usually hike alone, but to get there you do need 4 wheel drive for the 2 mile camp bonanza rd. We saw some wild ponies on the way in! My hike partner & I got there right before 8 & were able to start right on time. Going up, the switchbacks are absolutely easier than north or south loop trailheads. The trail is super clean and straightforward. Roughly, the first 2 miles is a lot of your elevation gain. There are the most beautiful wildflowers blooming right now, I couldn't stop smiling. We went on a pretty windy day – what would normally be not so cold was at times very chilling by the strong winds. Although with that being said, the clouds just made all the views that much more enticing and gorgeous! Once you get past that, you kind of curve around through the trees for some more switchbacks before you hit the saddle. Once you pass through that you have the last set of switchbacks & straight up to the peak! As usual, I just enjoy the hike so much we sauntered up in 3.5 hours. Signed the logbook & snapped some quick pics. The wind was so very strong I couldn't stay there for long without a jacket lol. We were able to post up on the side behind the rocks hiding from the wind enough to warm up & eat snacks with a view! The way down was a glide, just over 2 hours. All trails says 7.5 miles and the recommended trail on here says 9.2 … my watch said well over that LOL so I'm not exactly sure. Overall, I would absolutely do this one again. Making my way through #4 of 6 – Can't stop now!
