Late busy day left us little time to get to the trail head much before sunset. Hit the trail about 5:30. Note that as you drive out you pass a very large sign that warns you about no trespassing without a state land trust permit. This is for some of the land adjacent the parking lot is part of Tonto forest so no worries.
Still light as we hit the trail we moved fast to try to get to the saddle before the sun was completely down. We didn't quite make it in time but there was still enough light to not have to use our headlamps until we started the decent. The trail is a fun trail, kinda winding through different terrains some areas of the trail covered by heavy trees but most open with great views of the canyon walls on both sides. Some areas of the trail were dirt, others boulders with some large steps and others just along sheer flat rock.
Closer to the top is a cool rock that looks almost like my dogs head (see blurry picture) or some other creature with an eye. The silhouette of the ridge line was spectacular at this time of day. The air was much cooler and a nice breeze was refreshing.
By headlamps we descended back to the lot which is always fun and a different perspective as we focus much more on the trail and the sounds around us.
Fun hike!
