Beautiful hike up Baden-Powell. My Garmin recorded exactly 8 miles, 2,865 feet of elevation gain, and 3 hr 10 min moving time, and I drank about 1.5 L of water. If you're looking for a relentless workout, this is a great trail to push the pace on. It's a steady uphill grade with a clear trail. Never too hard, but certainly never too easy!
Most of the hike, up to the final ridgeline, is shaded – which sure helps on a hot day. Toward the top you can see the Wally Waldron tree, said to be the oldest living thing in the Angeles National Forest at 1500 years old. Look for a wooden post to mark the tree's location, but there was no sign attached to the post.
On the way home we stopped at a cute coffeehouse/wine bar called Village Grind in Wrightwood, just a few minutes down from the trailhead, and I recommend it for a cold drink.
