Great day. Not sure if I didn’t eat enough last night or if the elevation got to me, but I felt a bit slow today. Still, absolutely beautiful views, though I didn’t manage to see any bighorns on the trail. Maybe some other time.

Social Hiker -- Home of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge Series

San Bernardino Peak has reopened after being closed for nearly two years due to a wildfire in 2020. The fire damage to the forest is devastating, but there is still beauty to be experienced. Challenger Dennis captured some great photos from his hike. up San B on April 9th.

The NorCal Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge includes a hike that starts end ends at Stinson Beach and climbs to the 2,571' summit of Mount Tamalpais. It includes a lush, forested stream with a ladder alongside a waterfall. This is our favorite hike in the challenge.

Winter is coming (🌧❄️), so I snuck in a long hike on what felt like a balmy April day.

I’ve been wanting to climb Mount Si since we moved to WA. It was a cloudless day and joyful reminder hiking makes me feel free. It’s a way to push my limits that doesn’t feel like pushing. It’s discovery and exploration and travel. It’s time to just be and reflect.

Henry David Thoreau tells us that “all good things are wild and free.” It feels a lot like that. 😊🏔🌲

Our monthly theme for January is Hiking Fitness. How do you train for bigger hikes? Here's my story.

When my girlfriend and I were training for a 3-week thru-hike of the 211-mile John Muir Trail, I knew that we needed a structured training plan. We had been hiking every Wednesday night after work on the 'Roller Coaster Ridge' near San Clemente, but 4.6 mile loop wouldn't cut it alone.

We added a 6-mile hike every Monday after work, and then longer hikes on the weekends. On the JMT we would be averaging 12 miles/day and over 2k vertical feet. So we started increasing the distance and total vertical gain on our hikes, staying local. We loaded gallon jugs of water into the backpacks we would use and carried those on our day hikes. And when we had the the mileage and the vertical gain, we started hiking what would become the first-ever Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge.

Today, I continue to use the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge as part of my training for other adventures, but also use other tools to help me keep on track between hikes. I'm using the activity rings on my Apple Watch (aiming for a perfect January). I use the Peloton Bike and the app for cardio, strength and flexibility training. And I use Strava for tracking activities across sports (biking, hiking, and soon... skiing).
