We climbed Piestewa Peak at dawn to watch the sun set over the city from the top. Although I've hiked this trail many times, I've never summited it at night. We watched the sky turn a brilliant red, orange, and purple; the lights of Phoenix shone below. Then, equipped with headlamps, we trekked back down in the dark. The descent itself was a fun adventure!
It was a bit chilly when sitting at the top, as the weather had just cooled down and was in the high 50s following rain the day before. There was a decent amount of traffic so had to make way for on-goers, but nothing compared to the typically over-crowded trail during a day hike. Urban trails aren't typically my favorite, as there are so many people; especially at the peak of Piestewa where people blare their music, pretty much ruining the ambiance. This wasn't the case during our evening hike: the few people at the top respected the awe of the sunset.
I don't know if ascending Piestewa during the day will ever be as enjoyable for me, now that I've climbed it at night! I highly recommend it.
