It was a damp, rainy day…perfect for a hike! Ok maybe not so much but we're on vacation so we have to make the most of what we got. It seemed like a better idea than going to the mall.
This trail is long but for the most part has a gradual incline. It is nicely groomed which made it totally manageable even in damp weather. We choose to do the loop (counter clockwise), going up King Canyon trail which has some steeper switchbacks near the summit.
After a nice break at the summit, where we enjoyed our lunch, we made our way down Hugh Norris trail to Gould Mine trail which completed the loop and returned us to the King Canyon trailhead.
An interesting feature of the Gould Mine section of the trail is the old copper mine shaft, which is covered by a large grate and surrounded by barbed wire. It is said to be over 300 ft deep. The mine dates back to 1906 but has not been active since its final closing in 1954.
Parks crew were doing some work on the Hugh Norris section of the trail but even that part was in good shape.
Despite the weather, this turned out to be a great way to spend the day!
