I haven’t hiked the Sunol route, so I’ll be interested to hear your take.

Hi Katreenah!
We announced the date and location in the challengers only forum back in March: https://socialhiker.net/challenges/2018-socal-six-pack-of-peaks-challenge/forum/topic/socal-finishers-party-date-set/
Hope you can join us!

Hi Crystal,
I posted details on the fire closure in the SoCal challengers-only forum here: https://socialhiker.net/challenges/2018-socal-six-pack-of-peaks-challenge/forum/topic/san-bernardino-peak-and-san-gorgonio-peak-closure/
We will be keeping an eye on things and update as information becomes available. If for some reason, San Gorgonio and San Bernardino will remain closed beyond the end of July, the “fire modified” Six-Pack of Peaks will be: Mt Wilson, Ontario Peak, Cucamonga Peak, Mt Baden-Powell, Mt Baldy and Mt San Jacinto.

Cecil, what route are you planning to take? There is typically some water at Limber Pine spring, and also at High Creek. There are a couple of other springs that are off the divide, so you'd have to hike downhill (losing the elevation you've already climbed) and then hike back up to the divide — not idea, but could be necessary.
August is pretty dry, but when I hiked the divide last year it was in September and there was still water at Limber Pine spring. A trickle, but enough to refill our bottles.
If you are going up Vivian Creek to San G first, then there should be water at High Creek Camp. Or if you're going via South Fork trailhead, there is water where you cross South Fork. A lot depends on the route.
As for how much to carry, I planned for one liter to get from Limber Pines to camp, one liter for dinner plus breakfast, and one liter to get from camp to the next water source (three liters total). I could've easily used four.

Hi Susan! Yes, a permit is necessary but for day hikes they are easy to get. I’m going to share three routes (there are more). Each of these links has info on permit requirements.

The cut-off is for an invite to the Finisher's Party, mainly because we need to finalize head count, etc.FWIW, Europe doesn't sound too shabby, either. 🙂

Hi Courtney!
Hope this isn't too late. Last time I hiked San Bernardino was back in September, which is late in the season and there was still water at Limber Pine spring (which is actually at a turn on the last switchback BEFORE Limber Pine Camp). Normally there is still water running (trickling) there through July at least. Since there was still some snow at the top on May 7th, it's a safe bet that there's water available there.
I am hiking Baldy this Saturday, April 28th. Did anyone hike Baldy last weekend? If so how was the weather?
Also, I have studied google earth map and from what I can see, parking at Manker Flats is street or median parking. Is that correct or there an obvious parking lot that I should look for that I am not seeing on google earth?
Thank you!
Debra
Hi Debra! Be sure to check out the latest hike logs for Mt Baldy here: https://socialhiker.net/six-pack-peaks-challenge/southern-california/2018-hike-logs/mount-baldy-hike-logs/
Based on what other challengers have reported, there are still patches of snow, but nothing on the trail. You can always leave a comment on anyone's hike log to get more info.
Also, Manker Flats is not a parking lot. Along that area you'll see cars parked on both sides of the street and in the median. It's pretty obvious once you're there. 😉

Hi Marc (@namnori)! Good news… we are putting the finishing touches on things and preparing to launch the New England Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge next month over Memorial Day weekend. You can't quite register (yet), but if you look in the menu on this site, you'll see we've added a whole new section with sub-pages for each of the six peaks.

Looking at the map of the fire area, it doesn't look like it's actually cross into any of the trails or camps in the area yet, and it seems like the firefighters have been able to hold the perimeter. Fingers crossed that things open up soon!
Challenger Greg and his wife Barbara were actually camped at High Creek when the fire broke out. A helicopter hovered above the area and told them on a loudspeaker to “evacuate immediately.” So much for their sunrise summit, but at least they made it out safely.
