South Sister
About this peak
South Sister is the third-tallest mountain in Oregon and a volcano in the Three Sisters Wilderness west of Bend. The recommended route is the Hiking South Sister guide, about 12 miles round trip with roughly 4,820 feet of gain from the Devils Lake trailhead. It is a long, demanding day, which makes it a fitting finale for the Central Oregon challenge. Advance permits are required from June 15 to October 15, so reserve yours before you plan the date.

Hazards
A very long day, about 12 miles with roughly 4,820 feet of gain, so start early and carry plenty of water, food and layers. From June 15 to October 15 a Central Cascades Wilderness Permit is required for day use and the Devils Lake quota is limited, with permits released 10 days and then two days before the trip date. Wilderness rules apply: groups must be smaller than 12, bicycles and drones are prohibited, and everything must be packed out.
