About this challenge
The San Diego Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge has seven peaks and asks you to log any six. Mount Woodson (2,881 ft, home of Potato Chip Rock) is an optional alternate that can replace any of the other six: Volcan Mountain, Corte Madera, Cuyamaca Peak, Hot Springs Mountain, High Point on Palomar Mountain and El Cajon Mountain. They range from 3,675 ft to 6,533 ft, and Hot Springs Mountain is the highest point in San Diego County.
Set your own pace: six days, six weeks or six months. Volcan Mountain (5.1 miles) is the gentlest start, while El Cajon Mountain (11 miles, about 4,000 ft of gain) and High Point (13.8 miles) are the toughest. Hot Springs Mountain is on the Los Coyotes Reservation, which charges an entrance fee. El Cajon Mountain is closed in August because of extreme heat, so plan that hike for another month.
How it works
One membership covers every challenge.
Log any 6 of the 7 peaks, using the date you hiked.
A peak badge for each summit and a finisher badge at 6.
Rules and guidelines
Same for every challenge
- Log the day you hiked. Use the date of your summit, and log each peak once per challenge.
- Leave No Trace. Pack out everything, stay on trail and respect wildlife and other hikers.
- Know your limits. Check conditions, permits and closures before you go, and turn around if it is unsafe.
- Hike at your own risk. The community shares information, and you are responsible for your own safety.
