Cuyamaca Peak
About this peak
Cuyamaca Peak is San Diego County’s second highest summit at 6,512 feet, with clear-day views stretching from Mexico to the Coronado Islands. It lies in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and the Six-Pack route is flexible: a popular option is the Lookout Fire Road from Paso Picacho Campground, about 5 miles round trip with roughly 1,540 feet of gain on a steep, paved service road. This is the one trail in the park where leashed dogs are allowed. The upper road is cracked and the summit is crowded with antennas and buildings.
Know before you go
Hazards
The Lookout Fire Road was built for vehicles, so the grade is steady and steep, and the asphalt near the top is deteriorating. Poison oak and poodle-dog bush, which causes a severe rash, grow along and off the trail, so do not touch plants you cannot identify. Bikes share the road. Dogs are allowed on leash on the fire road only, not on the park's other trails.
