My hiking buddy, Stacy and I arrived just as the park was opening. The air was crisp and the park was quiet. The first mile up got us near the mouth of the canyon. It was a lovely incline and the canyon and peaks are spectacular especially with the sun just rising. The shadows are dramatic. We stayed to the left of the canyon pursuant to tips we had read from other hikers. The trail became half scramble, half trail until we reached the rock basin. The day before I had experienced some heat exhaustion just as we completed Wasson Peak. I still didn't feel fully myself. Just a little weak and unsure. When we got to the basin, we watched as a couple of hikers navigated up the wall from the basin. One of the hikers was having difficulty. She would go up and then come down and then sit. This happened quite a few times. After much discussion and talking with a few of the hikers that came through the basin, we decided to turn around. From the basin, the trail would become very technical, requiring a full body workout and I just didn't have the strength that day. It was still a wonderful hike and breakfast after was delicious! Until next time Flatiron!
