Caliente Mountain
About this peak
Caliente Mountain is the highest point in San Luis Obispo County and in the Caliente Range, rising above the Carrizo Plain National Monument. The Six-Pack route follows the Caliente Mountain Ridge Trail, about 16.9 miles round trip with roughly 2,437 feet of gain, mostly on a ridge road. There is no shade and the access roads are dirt, so plan for a long, hot day and avoid the area during or after heavy rain.

Hazards
There is no shade on the route, so summer outings are not advised and you should carry all the water you need. Rain turns the adobe clay roads into sticky mud and can close monument roads, so stay away during or shortly after heavy rain. The final stretch of access road is steep dirt that deteriorates higher up. Some approaches cross private land that does not allow trespassing, so stay on the recognized route.
