About this peak
High Point is the 6,138-foot summit of Palomar Mountain, topped by a fire lookout tower that is closed to the public. The recommended Six-Pack route is the out-and-back Oak Grove Trail from Highway 79, 13.8 miles with about 3,509 feet of gain, a long and dry day. The trail is shared with dirt bikes and 4x4s on the road above the locked gate, so stay alert, and carry plenty of water.

Hazards
The hike is long, dry and sustained, with no reliable water, so carry plenty. The trail is rocky and washed out in places with steep switchbacks near the top, and the first half mile has confusing dirt roads, so watch for trail signs. Dirt bikes and 4x4s may be on the road from the locked gate to the summit. The lookout tower and the Palomar Observatory area are closed to the public.
