There will be a NorCal version of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge, using the Bay Area as the hub. We are working with much lower elevation peaks (because that's what is near the area), but we will have a number of double-digit mileage hikes and multiple thousands of vertical gain.

In other words, it will be a challenge.

We have a list of candidate peaks that need to be “auditioned” and are scheduling our initial scouting hikes. Once we finalize the list, we'll set a date to open registration. We are shooting for Spring 2018.

The good news is that these peaks will be hike-able pretty much year round. Some get a bit of snow now and then, but it's unusual.
REI also has one of those waterproof Tom Harrison maps for Mt Wilson and surrounding area; I just bought one for myself yesterday actually. -marc
Great recommendation, Marc. I love the Tom Harrison Maps. You can find them at most local outdoor shops or online at Amazon.

    Hi Susan!

There are a number of trails up Mount Wilson. As with all the peaks, you are welcome to choose whichever route you want up. I have a trail guide to the loop that I have hiked many times. The trail is fairly well marked on the ascent, but once you reach the observatory complex, it helps to have a map of that area. I have all of that available on SoCalHiker. You can find links to those guides on this page: https://socialhiker.net/six-pack-peaks-challenge/southern-california/

It's also in the menu on the left under Six-Pack of Peaks.

    Happy Trails!

My mom and step-dad drove 11 hours from the Bay Area up to Prairie City OR for the totality — and said it was totally worth it.

I'll leave the photos to the pros…

Just a brief update, since this has already been launched and the first hike logs have come in… We replaced Mt Guyot with Mount Bierstadt. Bierstadt is a 14er and higher than Guyot, but a more straightforward hike. Guyot has a LOT of nasty scrambling and we felt it was outside the scope of this challenge. Still a great peak, though.
