I'm mulling over within the next few weeks breaking up San G by backpacking to Halfway in the afternoon, so I can slack-pack to the summit the next morning and then down n out.

Well, so much for these plans. Had the overnight permit for July 13, and the Valley Fire officially killed it. I was just contacted by the Mill Creek Ranger Station that all permits, issued for the coming days (mine was for 4 days from now) for the San Gorgonio Wilderness are suspended. Hopefully the fire crews can (safely) get a handle on this fire so we can all resume getting to San Bernardino and San Gorgonio!

I did it this past Saturday and past Icehouse Saddle, there was a good couple of inches of snow. In the morning some places were a bit icy while in the afternoon it was all slushy. Many people used micro-spikes (I was able to manage without though). That said, I believe it snowed on Sunday up there, and I think either last night or the night before but I don't know how much…

I buy mine at REI, but have seen them at other major sporting goods stores (Big 5 for example). I believe you can buy them online too.

Adventure Pass is $30, so I got that. Turns out a couple of the hikes I repeated last year, so it was worth it for me.

REI also has one of those waterproof Tom Harrison maps for Mt Wilson and surrounding area; I just bought one for myself yesterday actually. -marc

haha, I'm actually going to FINISH the 6-pack this year. Last year I ran out of time; permit to camp was denied in Sept so couldn't get Gorgonio completed by 9/30. Also having completed the Trans Catalina Trail on my 49th birthday, I'm now mulling over similar challenges for my 50th this October. Dare I say Whitney?

That's awesome! I'm heading back there this weekend, so while the timing is off maybe I can still get one in as a ‘practice run'. But I already have a couple of other trips planned this summer to the area, so now I know what I'm doing. Thanks @Jeff!

what a great ToDo list! I hadn't heard of the 12-Peak Angeles Natl Forest challenge, and I just signed up (https://hikingangelesforest.com/12-peak-challenge/). Too bad Wilson isn't on their list, or 2 of the 6-Pack would count (Baldy is the only one).
