Absolutely! The routes described for the challenge are just a guide. I think the Presidential Traverse qualifies as “challenging.” 😉

Congratulations, David! That's a huge accomplishment!
Jeff is spot on with all of these recommendations. A couple of other items you might find useful as well are a whistle, small space blanket, and first aid kit. I always like to be prepared for the unexpected. The noise of a whistle carries a long way if you need to get someone's attention. A tiny space blanket fits in the plan of your hand and only weighs a couple of ounces, but can be used to keep yourself or someone else warm. Small first aid kits are also worth their weight.
Good catch on those additional items. My pack has a whistle built-in to the sternum strap, so I often forget about that. The space blanket it smart. I totally forgot about the first aid kit, which is absolutely in my pack. You can “roll your own” first aid kit pretty inexpensively. I usually put more band aids and ibuprofen than the pre-packaged ones include. 😉

No kidding! And of course, now we have the atmospheric river hammering Sonoma.
Entire town of Guerneville cut off by Russian River flooding

AdministratorFebruary 13, 2019 at 10:25 am in reply to: Colorado Six-Pack Road Trip in July 2019Hey Carisa! We have some flexibility — I'm just putting some dates down to get things rolling. If you have a preference, let me know! Depending on snowfall this season, some of these peaks may still have some snow at the higher elevations. When I did Grays Peak on July 3rd, there were a couple snowfields we had to cross — nothing too technical, but nice to have micro spikes.
As I mentioned in my original post, we are planning a peak day followed by an off day. The “off” day can be used for other hikes or other activities. We are going to be bringing our dog Lucy, and she won't quite be ready for tackling these (I don't think… the rule of thumb is 5 minutes of hiking for each month of age). Joan may take her part way on some of these, then puppy-sit at the trailhead or in town.
We're doing another road trip to Arizona and Utah in May with Lucy, so we'll have a better feel for what works with the little scoundrel. 🙂
Is this open yet? I saw there were mudslides and I know Chantry Flats has been closed otherwise.
The road to Chantry Flat is closed, but you can still hike it, if you're ambitious. Diana R did! https://socialhiker.net/hike_log/extra-mileage/

Yes, I have, but not camping at the summit. There are several campsites on Winter Creek and Sturdevant Creek that are free and first-come, first-serve. They have picnic tables and fire rings. They aren't the most “wild” places to camp, but it can be a lot of fun.

Have fun on this hike tomorrow! Looking forward to the trip report.
Hi Jeff,
Is there anyway I can check if I reserved my spot for the finishers party? I clearly remember I did but I didn’t get an email with the ticket info. So I’m thinking probably it didn’t go through. I tried purchasing a ticket but it’s says it’s not available anymore. Hopefully you can help me before the party tomorrow.
Thank you
Gabriela, you are on the attendee list. No need to print out tickets.
